The building now called Richmond Guest House originates back to 1881, and had quite a chequered history until its current owner John Cairns bought it in 1993 and proceeded to redecorate it. In 1994 the building was given its current name, and John continued renovating and redecorating until 1999, where progress stalled when the guest househad a serious fire which closed it for some 15 months, and left John hospitalised and badly disfigured (to this day he receives plenty ofcomments and questions – some at times insensitive – due to hisappearance, and has ongoing medical problems relating to the fire).
But to quote John, ‘Life goes on’, both for him and ‘The Richmond’,where, due to his efforts, the guest house currently has 13 rooms in total, all with their own en suite bathrooms, and John is finally in aposition to restore the front hallway of the guest house to its original splendor, complete with plaster cornice and ceiling. (As an aside, apart from redecorating, John is also a well known collector of porcelain figurines from Europe. These are on display inthe guest house.)
